Albany, NY, June 24, 2008 – Institute for Clinical Pharmacodynamics (ICPD) today announced its ongoing collaboration with the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit Hospital for Tropical Diseases, located in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. The collaboration, directed locally by ICPD’s Director, Paul G. Ambrose, Pharm.D., FIDSA, encompasses the application of PK-PD to tropical diseases such as typhoid fever and tuberculosis meningitis in pediatric and adult patient populations. The goal of the collaboration is to better understand patient population PK and PK-PD to guide the rational use of antibiotics.
According to ICPD’s Senior Scientist of Translational Medicine,
Dr. Christopher M. Rubino, Pharm.D., BCPS, “Collaborations of this type are crucial to learning about the population PK and PK-PD of new and established therapies and underserved populations. This is especially critical in the context of multidrug-resistant pathogens, which is an increasing concern in Southeast Asia.”
The first presentation of data derived from this collaboration occurred at the 2007 Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) in Chicago, IL where a presentation was made demonstrating the failure of nalidixic acid screening tests to predict gatifloxacin efficacy in patients with typhoid fever and demonstrated a gatifloxacin exposure response relationship with efficacy. The latter of these was the first ever in this patient population. Upcoming presentations include the population PK of gatifloxacin in Nepali pediatric and adult patients with typhoid fever and the PK-PD of quinolones in patients with tuberculosis meningitis.
The ICPD serves as a center for translational science collaboration to the world. We help pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies develop more effective and safer drugs through advanced methods of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic system analysis. Our general contact information is as follows:
