Research Focus

Dr. Melhem’s scientific interests focus on the utilization of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) principles in the area of oncology. His vision of optimizing targeted and cytotoxic cancer therapies in the clinical setting is based on building PK-PD knowledge that can be gained as early as pre-clinical testing. He also focuses on the use of quantitative techniques such as imaging and physiologically relevant biomarkers to guide the individualization of cancer therapies.

During the early years of his career, Dr. Melhem contributed to both design and implementation in the early stages of drug development programs for oncology, anti-infectives, neuropharmacology, and obstructive pulmonary disorders. His role involved dose selection, dose optimization, biomarker selection, support of clinical trial designs, as well as trial simulations.

Dr. Melhem has also served as a resource (as either an employee or consultant) to support submissions of investigational New Drug Applications (INDs) and New Drug Applications (NDAs) to regulatory agencies. His experience in this area has involved activities including the design of pre-clinical and clinical studies, target qualification, data preparation and analyses, and ultimately, presentation at regulatory meetings.

Dr. Melhem holds professional society memberships in the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists and the American Society for Microbiology. He is the author or co-author of approximately 20 peer-reviewed scientific publications, presentations, and abstracts.

Dr. Melhem received his B.Sc. in Pharmacy from the University of Jordan and his Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati. During his doctoral education, Dr. Melhem trained as a fellow at CDER-FDA in the areas oncology and pharmacometrics.
