Commentary on Drug Development by ICPD’s Dr. Sujata M. Bhavnani Published in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery

Albany, NY, December 15, 2006 – Institute for Clinical Pharmacodynamics (ICPD) announced today that an invited commentary by Dr. Sujata M. Bhavnani on the challenges of antibacterial drug development was published today in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery. Dr. Bhavnani was one of seven scientists representing academia, government agencies, and the pharmaceutical industry selected to provide perspective on the growing scientific and business challenges to anti-infective drug development.

Dr. Bhavnani believes that innovative study design and optimal dose selection are ways to decrease the risk of anti-infective drug development. “The risk of anti-infective drug development can be minimized through the use of pre-clinical infection models and early human pharmacokinetic data to identify likely effective regimens”, said Dr. Bhavnani.

However, Dr. Bhavnani feels “the perception of regulatory uncertainty is a serious impediment to the development of new antibiotics and stems in part from a lack of clear and consistent communication between companies and regulators, and also from pharm’s failure to heed regulatory and expert advice”.

Assuming that the regulatory uncertainty abates, Dr. Bhavnani feels that “success in the development of important antibacterial agents should follow if future studies use optimal dosing regimens and innovative and efficient study designs based on informative endpoints”.
