Research Focus

In addition to his strong clinical background in pediatrics and oncology, Dr. Rubino’s scientific interests focus on the utilization of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) principles in the area of pediatric pharmacology. Dr. Rubino’s interest in translational science involves the integration of pre-clinical pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic data and early clinical pharmacokinetic data to identify dosage regimens that optimize the probability of positive clinical outcomes and minimize the potential of drug toxicities. In addition, by bridging adult PK-PD to the known ontogeny of drug disposition in children, Dr. Rubino has been instrumental in helping to define appropriate drug dosing schemes for drugs used to treat pediatric illnesses, specifically in the areas of infectious disease, asthma, and urinary incontinence.

From a regulatory standpoint, Dr. Rubino has served as a resource for several pharmaceutical firms during the submission of adult- and pediatric-related filings to the FDA. The pediatric-related filings have been in support of both the voluntary process of Pediatric Exclusivity (via the Best Pharmaceuticals for Children Act) as well as those required under the Pediatric Rule (now known as the Pediatric Research Equity Act). Dr. Rubino’s experience in this area spans the full breadth of activities from designing studies in adults and children to analysis of PK-PD data from such studies and, ultimately, to presentation at regulatory meetings.

Dr. Rubino holds many professional society memberships, including the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and the American Society for Microbiology. Dr. Rubino is the author or co-author of approximately 30 peer-reviewed scientific publications, abstracts, and book chapters. He has been board-certified in Pharmacotherapy since 1997 and was honored with the 1996 Doctor of Pharmacy Research Award by the University at Buffalo. He also serves on the editorial board for Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

Dr. Rubino received his B.Sc. in Pharmacy (1994) from the University of Connecticut, his Pharm.D. (1996) from the University at Buffalo, and completed a two-year post doctoral fellowship in neonatal pharmacotherapy (1998) at the Women’s Hospital of Greensboro, NC.
